🥇 xG Awards: Team Edition

The Data Darlings, Statistical Superstars and xG Excellers

Well, that’s it. The final whistle has blown, the trophies have been lifted, the tears wiped away (unless you're a Man Utd fan), and your FPL team has been quietly deleted from existence. The 2024/25 Premier League season is officially over.

But fear not - The xG Edge has you covered. Because while the football might be over, the numbers are just getting warmed up.

Today, we’re handing out the only end-of-season awards that actually matter: the ones powered by expected goals. From the teams who tore up the underlying metrics, to the ones who rode their luck all the way to the table's top half - we’re diving deep into the quirks, overperformers, flukes, frauds, and quiet dominators.

Think of it as the Ballon d'Or for nerds.

So grab a coffee, settle in, and enjoy our stat-fuelled celebration of the 2024/25 Premier League season… 📊

Bite-sized facts to drop in the group chat.

😲 22 of the 26 Man Utd players who took a shot this season underperformed their xG.

🚀 But, the Red Devils are on the verge of signing the two biggest xG over-performers last season - Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.

⚪️ Tottenham scored 64 goals from 63.98(xG) in the Premier League this season - almost exactly in lines with expectation.

🤯 Southampton, Leicester and Ipswich were all in the bottom three for both xG created and xG conceded.

🔫 PSG only lost on xG six times this season, and three of those were against Arsenal.

🥇 Best in the Land Award

🏆️ Winner: Liverpool

💬 Why They Won: Arne Slot’s new-look Reds didn’t just impress the eye - they owned the spreadsheets. Liverpool led the league in xG created and were second only to Arsenal in xG conceded.

📊 Stat to Know: Liverpool’s xG Difference (+50.62) was just 0.01 short of the combined total of Arsenal (+28.28) and Man City (+22.35).

⚖️ Edge: Based on underlying numbers, Liverpool were the best team in the Premier League - and the xG models now make them narrow favourites for the 2025/26 title (30–35% chance).

🎢 Most Exciting Team Award

🏆️ Winner: Tottenham

💬 Why They Won: Ange Postecoglou promised entertainment - and he delivered, whether Spurs were tearing teams apart or getting torn apart themselves.

📊 Stat to Know: Spurs matches featured a league-high 133.04(xG) - the most chaotic, end-to-end football in the division. Spurs only created ~4.00(xG) less than Arsenal, but conceded more than everyone still playing in the league next season.

⚖️ Edge: If you want value per minute, book a trip to N17. The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium saw more xG than any other ground in the league this season (71.78). Goals, drama, and defensive mayhem included.

🤯 Worst Finishers Award

🏆️ Winner: Everyone

💬 Why They Won: This season saw the worst collective finishing performance of any Premier League season since records began.

📊 Stat to Know: Players scored 1,081 goals from 1,192.66(xG). That’s 111.66 goals which the xG Gods have robbed from us.

⚖️ Edge: The league currently employs Nicolas Jackson, Darwin Nunez, and Rasmus Hojlund. What do you expect?
